If you think you may have any denture problems your first priority should be to speak to a dental clinician. Here at The Denture Practice in Wolverhampton we are always happy to help answer your questions and provide advice when you need it. We believe that no denture problem is too small for us to help you with and it is best that they are dealt with before the issues become more serious.

What are the most common denture problems we see at The Denture Practice?

Gum and mouth irritation

After an initial bedding-in period of up to 8 weeks, well fitted dentures should not cause gum and mouth irritation.

However, with time your denture may change shape if not cared for properly and/or your jawbone, gums and surrounding tissues may change. This will cause issues with the fit and bit of your denture which in turn causes irritation.

When this occurs, come and see one of our clinicians who will examine the fit and make adjustments where possible. Do not attempt to fix your denture by yourself, you are likely to damage it and cause further issues.

Difficulty chewing and speaking

Dentures are not natural teeth and when you first get them you may experience some difficulty speaking and eating with them. As with all devices, your ability to do so will improve with practice.

When speaking, remember that your voice will sound a little different to yourself as sound is carried through the bone and tissue in your head. This change will not be as noticeable to those around you so do not worry about it. We also suggest that you speak slowly at first and practise difficult words daily. With no time you will gain the confidence to speak without worrying about it.

While you are getting used to your dentures you may find it difficult to chew. At first you should chew slowly, eat soft foods and take smaller bites of food. Practice chewing on both sides of your mouth to prevent movement and avoid sticky foods. With practice you will be able to eat almost anything you would like.

Poorly secured dentures

This is one of the most common denture problems we see here at The Denture Practice.  Some people may need to secure their dentures using denture adhesive due to the natural shape of their jawbone. This is often as a result of bone resorption. In this case denture adhesive is a practical and effective solution. Always follow manufacturer instructions when using denture adhesive both for securing your denture and for cleaning them and your gums. If you are unsure how to use denture adhesive our friendly clinicians are here to help.

However, if your denture is fitting poorly because they have been poorly made, have changed shape or your mouth has changed, our advice is to see a clinician as soon as possible and not try to solve the problem with denture adhesive.

Infections

Prevention is always the best cure. We therefore recommend that you clean your dentures and oral cavity regularly and address any issues with poorly fitting dentures as soon as you notice them as well as attending an annual checkup.  However, when your dentures do cause an infection you need to see a dentist to treat the infection as soon as possible. If the issue is caused by the denture our clinicians can advise on the best way to resolve this.
