At The Denture Practice in Wolverhampton we aim to ensure that you go home with a smile and with the best quality dentures possible. Our team of experienced professionally qualified Clinicians and Technicians have put together some tips to help you take care of your gums when wearing dentures.
Keeping your gums healthy is important as swollen and painful gums can make wearing dentures uncomfortable. Worse still, if your gums become infected it is possible that they could be damaged to the point where you will not be able to use your dentures effectively
The good news is that a little attention to good oral hygiene will go a long way. Just follow the simple rules below, and don’t forget that if you ever are worried about what to do we are here to help.
Remember, it’s not just any smile, it’s your smile.
Keep your dentures clean
Get into the good habit of a daily cleaning routine. At the end of the day:
- Remove your dentures and clean your gums and any natural teeth with a soft toothbrush. If you have used adhesive, please remember to clean this off your gums.
- Rinse your dentures under cold or lukewarm water (never hot) and then brush your dentures with a denture paste. Normal toothpaste should never be used as it’s too abrasive and will damage your dentures.
- Keep Moist Overnight: Our TrueGrip digital dentures should not be soaked overnight. If cleaning with a solution, soak for no more than 20-30 minutes (see solution guidelines) and then place your denture in a moist tissue in your denture box overnight.
Remember to rinse your dentures before you put them back in your mouth. It is also sensible to rinse your dentures after eating to remove any food that may become lodged in them.
Always clean your gums
Now that you know how to keep your dentures clean, don’t forget about your gums. Use a soft toothbrush to massage your gums and, if you have a partial denture, to brush your teeth. If you use denture adhesive ensure that this is removed as part of your cleaning routine. We also recommend that you use dental mouthwash.
Saliva is important for gum health and keeping your mouth clean, we therefore recommend that you drink water and avoid becoming dehydrated. The old advice of drinking a litre of water is good advice.
Give your gums time to “breathe”
Your gums are not naturally covered, therefore it is vital that you give them a chance to “breathe” daily. If your dentures are soaking overnight your gums will receive a much needed rest. If this isn’t possible we suggest you take them out for at least half an hour daily.

- A regular annual check-up can help ensure your dentures are still fitting properly and not slipping and causing discomfort. Loose fitting dentures can irritate the gums and cause sores and infections.
- If your dentures need to be repaired, bring them in. Damaged dentures can damage your gums and mouth and cause bone resorption.
